Nope, not talking about the tiny but readable Sanskrit Bhagavad Gita that resides in my bead bag pocket

But rather the newly updated Vedabase app which is now available for not only iPhone & iPod,  but now iPhone 4 & iPad with its improved retina display.  Previously known as Pocket Vedabase, Pocket Vedas works great.  There is a night and day font and I have used it for reading in dark for hours quite comfortably while the children are sleeping.

Here are list of the books in the app.  ● Bhagavad-gītā As It Is ● Śrīmad Bhāgavatam ● Śrī Caitanya Caritāmṛta ● Teachings of Lord Caitanya ● Nectar of Devotion (fixed missing sections from website) ● Nectar of Instruction ● Teachings of Lord Kapila ● Teachings of Queen Kuntī ● Śrī Brahma-saṃhitā ● Śrī Īśopaniṣad ● Mukunda-mālā-stotra ● Nārada Bhakti Sūtra

Retaining all the great features of it previous version such as dynamic book marks, which keeps your place in various books, this update includes a lot of other great features.  All the verse only pages are now available, so you can now read the index page that has all the verses for the each chapter.

Also all the hyperlinks now work.  Meaning any verse that is in the purport or in the index can be clicked on to go directly to that page.

The reading format is also improved, a simple tap on the screen (instead of the previous tiny ‘+’) brings up various menus.  On the two bottom corners you have the page turn.   If you click on one of those hyperlinks you can also click on the back and forward buttons to return back to the spot in the previous book that you were reading.

Updated for iOS 4, Pocket Vedas does not only open back to the exact spot you were reading from it also starts up with no boot time once opened.

However the main addition is the ability email booksmarks, verse links from Vedabase.net, and links that open the reader’s own Pocket Vedabase app to the desired verse.

This opens many uses such as updating reading notes to Evernote.  Or updating Facebook or Twitter status with a favorite quote with a link.  There a little work that can be done to improve the emailing.  Currently the links appear as such,

In time, learned philosophers or scientists might be able to count all the atoms of the earth, the particles of snow, or perhaps even the shining molecules radiating from the sun, the stars and other luminaries. But among these learned men, who could possibly count the unlimited transcendental qualities possessed by You, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who have descended onto the surface of the earth for the benefit of all living entities?

This does not allow editing of the link.   Just a Translation with with link embedded.  I have left a suggestion in a correspondence to just include the raw link, such as http://vedabase.net/sb/10/14/7 which allows the user to decide what text they want to post and also allows the link to work when updated in FB and Twitter via email. I hope to see this updated in the near future.

All in all I am very happy with the update.

Your humble servant,
Nityananda Chandra Das

PS.   For those who are updating, if you cannot see the hyperlinks and index pages when first updating app there is a simple and one time fix.  Go to the settings make any adjustment and apply and now it will work fine.  You can go back to your original settings again and it will still work, just a one time adjustment.

new buyer

Hello I was looking into purchasing the pocket Vedas app. But I am unsure if this is suitable to me and my iPad.
Is there a way of obtaining the app to try it out, then make a payment if its great, as £17.49 is not small fee?

Thank you

no apple does not have any

no apple does not have any feature like that. But you can always use Vedabase.com for free

pocket vedas

Seems like a nice app, but 24.99 is a bit steep...But I guess I have spent 24.99 on alot of useless things so the least I could do is make this investment...

issue with iPad version

I updated both my iPad and iPhone to the 2.0 version. The phone version is great. The iPad is having some issue with the text rendering. For whatever reason, the margins are very narrow and the text is very difficult to read. Not like the screenshot on the iTunes site. Is there a way to fix this?

You can always change the

You can always change the font size. I spoke with the makers of it and they said that an update with a few fixes and a change i suggested for the emailing links, to not include a translation but the actual link. This will enable it to be used for twitter and Fb updates and in this way you could also choose what content you want to email.

Thanks Prabhu, however....

Thanks Prabhu. Unfortunately I tried that with no effect. If I remember correctly, when I first loaded the App after the update (I had the 1.1 version previously), it looked fine, then suddenly it switched to this view where the text wraps in a one inch margin (on a 7 inch wide screen) when in portrait view.
I hope they can fix this, as this is my favorite App on both devices.
There are a few features that could really enhance the Pocket Vedabase. But even as a bare bones / read-only application, it's still pretty great. It would also be good if they could include other books by Srila Prabhupada. (eg, the Krsna book).

Hare Krishna, I do not have

Hare Krishna, I do not have an iPad but i do remember seeing that margin when I checked it out today on a friend's ipad. You should contact them through their website so that they know.

Thank you and will do.

Thanks Prabhu.
I have contacted the devotees at Dancing Ganesha regarding this issue. So far they have been very responsive, though we have not found a solution. But they have been very communicative and I am trying to get them the information they need.
If anyone else is experiencing this, please inform the devotees at Dancing Ganesha. If they don't know about the problem, they can't fix it.
Better yet, if there is a tech-savvy devotee out there who can help our dear Vaisnavas in their service, that would be even better.
Hare Krsna.

Solution

Hare Krsna
I fixed the problem, but only by resetting my iPad to the factory settings and reinstalling the program.
Now it works great. Thank you again to the folks as Dancing Ganesha for taking the time to help me figure it out.

For those not sure whether to get this application, it is highly recommended.

Nice Service

These apps are invaluable and a great service for iDevotees....maybe in the future the devotees in Leicester will make these apps available for free!
