There is saying most of us have heard: "We are born with nothing, and leave with nothing". All degrees, titles, wealth, properties, homes, material facilities and relationships must be left behind at death. For the materialist, death is a manifestation of God, the controller of life and time. For a devotee, Krishna is the life of our life, the consciousness of our consciousness, the heart of our heart! He is all sided, everything. He light, and darkness, the beginning, middle and end! He is...

The illusion of freedom, the greatest oppression the masses enslaved by the promise of capitalism. __________________________________________________ The folly of youth is what it is glorified for that each person is a clean slate with unlimited possibilities. We are advised: “You can do anything you set our mind to and act on”— not knowing our heart’s attractions, repulsions, inclinations already fixed. The illusion of freedom, the greatest oppression the masses enslaved by the promise of...

I wrote Friday's blog about motivations and qualifications for approaching or worshiping Krishna to encourage those of us who are not pure devotees and may have material desires that we want to fulfill. That is most of us---it is a question of degree, experience, maturity, and especially realization. It is important to realistically access where we are on the map---so to speak---and act with this in mind. This often takes time of course and we need to know that introspection isn't quick and may...

One of our great predecessor teachers or acharyas, Shrila Bhaktivinode Thakur has also analyzed four stages of motivation for serving Krishna: 1) fear, 2) prospect(what we will get), 3 duty, and 4) love. Many religions primarily motivate people through fear and intimidation, yet from the Bhakti prospective the goal is to be motivated purely by love. In the beginning we may have a mix of these different motivations. Again we have to begin somewhere, as long as we are cultivating the...

Give the gift that keeps on giving. In the Nectar of Devotion, Srila Prabhupada's magnificent summary study of Rupa Goswami's Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, he describes the glories of pure bhakti. Therein it is describes six features of pure bhakti. Krishna Consciousness bring relief from all distress. (Ajamil, the sinner saved) Krishna Consciousness is All Auspicious (the best welfare, BG 18.66) Krishna Consciousness produces supreme happiness (Material happiness temporary at best, Kholaveca...

How, one may ask, could Lord Krishna possibly care about my tiny insignificant self? Our guru, Shrila Prabhupada gave an example of our finger to illustrate how. If one might loose their baby finger, one doesn't think, "Who cares about my small finger, I have so many others as well as toes". No. One will try to save one's finger at all costs. Compared to infinite Krishna we are only a spark. Nevertheless we are Krishna's spark, and every one of the unlimited sparks or souls is important and...

The metaphysic of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhupu (considered the combined form of Radha and Krishna and the founder of our sampradaya or disciplic line) is called acintya-bhedabheda-tattva or the philosophy that the Lord and all his emanations are inconceivably, simultaneously one and different. To understand this perspective is the key to resolving many religious controversies or parts of our philosophy which some of you have expressed confusion about. Therefore the answers to many questions are...

"So our contact with matter is just like a dream. We are not fallen. Therefore, at any moment we can revive our Krishna consciousness. We become liberated as soon as we understand, "I have nothing to do with matter. I am simply Krishna's eternal servant." Sometimes when a fearful dream becomes intolerable, we break the dream. Similarly, we can break the material connection at any moment as soon as we wake up to Krishna consciousness. "Oh, Krishna is my eternal master. I am His servant." That's...
