Why Prabhupad?

Hare Krishna : )
I remember when I first found out about Krishna, I had gotten a Bhagavad Gita, and a Krishna book, and some Japa beads.
It was 1970, and things were fairly simple then. Meaning, those were the only books, there was no internet of course, and even the "oldest" "most experienced" devotees were very new in terms of how things are now days.
I read the Bhagavad Gita, and the Krishna book, and started chanting japa.
I thought Krishna was amazing, I was so fond of Him, and was reading that we could Love Krishna.
Being a simple 13 year old girl, this appealed to me very much.
Wow! We can Love God! And, He's a Person! And, He's Beautiful! (and you have to admit, Krishna IS Beautiful! :)
He does all these amazing things, and He has relationships with all these friends of His, Cowheard Boys, and Gopis, etc...
That was all really wonderful to me.
Yes, I also understood Bhagavad Gita, and knew Krishna consciousness was not just a sentimental "believe" in some kind of fantastical fantasy of "loving" this exotic Blue God....
However, I did not understand about Prabhupad.
When I was at the temple, and all the devotees were preparing to go to Gainesville to see Srila Prabhupad, and they were all going on and on about it... "oh, Prabhupad is coming" "how wonderful" etc..
I thought to myself "what is wrong with them, don't they understand that we are supposed to love Krishna?" (yep lol) :)
(it's another story what happened to me when I DID see him) :)
I came to understand later on, that the reason everyone was so taken with Prabhupad, is that without Him, we would not know Krishna at all.
He not only translated all the scriptures into English, but He also made it possible for so many of us to become devotees.
He accepted women as disciples, which had never been done before. He gave us 16 rounds to chant, instead of 64. He managed all of the various issues we had, and steered us in the right direction about them, no other sanyassi had done all those "material" things in the past. (I put material in quotes since nothing that Prabhupad does is ever material of course).
Even for someone who is Hindu, and knows plenty about Krishna, they still need the translations of Srila Prabhupad's books, His purports, and his instructions to be able to know how to approach Krishna in devotional service, and to follow His instructions to be on the correct path of Bhakti Yoga.
All these things are only some of the main reasons that devotees love Prabhupad so much, and talk about Him so much.
All Glories To Srila Prabhupad!

Guru is above everone

Hare Krishna to All,

This is an excellent Blog and it reminds me of the Fact what my parents always said, never make fun of your Master ot Teacher as he is above all.

I was a naughty kid and used to make faces and tried that mimickery when I was always scolded and today I realize that what I may have done was wrong but I think Master is a very important person.

Today what ever I am is beacause of their teachings be it subjective or otherwise.

I think Navasi Ji you are very lucky to have had the opportunity to learn directly from Prabhupad ji.

Guru Above All

Hare Krishna, Dear Vikasmalhotra,
Yes, you are right, Guru comes first, because through Him we learn the important things that matter in life.
Yes, I feel very lucky to have been given this wonderful opportunity, but like I was saying to Thirtho, in the post below, it doesn't take actually being around while He was on the planet to benefit as if we have met Him.
He is still here in all His teachings.
Hare Krishna,

Beautiful Tribute!

I can only imagine what it must have been like to have known such a magnificent person! (WILL you share your story of meeting Him some time?! I'd LOVE to hear all about it! :) ) One thing I have noticed - the more I read, the more I understand, the more I see photos of Him, the more I appreciate Him. I'm to the point where seeing a photo of Him brings a smile to my face and a feeling of love. I never met the man, but even without His walking the earth, I think His love shines through in His photos.

Feelings of Love

Hare Krishna, Dear Krishnaowned,
That's really wonderful that you are developing such feelings of love for Prabhupad. :)
We all try to understand Him, and what His message is, that way we can 'act accordingly'.
The more you associate with Srila Prabhupad, the more you want to associate with Him.
(He's kind of addictive isn't He?) lol
What a good addiction that is....
I love sharing things with you because you appreciate it and use it to further your spiritual advancement..... so, I feel sure sometime I'll end up sharing all my stories about being with Him, with you. : )

its true

when i was child i always think abt why we r taking serously our master. why we r showing such respect to him.
in hindu sastra(system) master/guru/teacher r playing the main role.master not only teachs us how to connect with god but also gives us the right direction of the path. only master can make us more devotee and provide us the rules of doing devotional activities. thats all i learn 4m my parents n priest. i have not enough lesson abt hindu sastra but i know these.

i read couple of book of Srila Prabhupad. i understand how he felt the krishna.i really wanna meet him.Unfortunately i couldnot do tht. :S

What A Childhood!

Hare Krishna, Dear Thirtho,
This is really fantastic, what you've shared here about how you learned growing up in your family about showing respect to the Guru and the reason for doing it.
If you had to learn only one lesson, as you've said, it seems to me that you learned the most essential one, because as we are talking, without understanding about following Prabhupad, we are lost.
You said here that you unfortunately didn't ever meet Prabhupad.
I would just like to let you know that really, you can still meet Him, every time you read His books, you are "meeting with Him" and also there are so many videos, lectures, etc... that you can "meet Him" by watching and listening to.
Srila Prabhupad told us that when He is gone, He is still there IN His Instructions.... so He's really there for the Meeting! : )
Hope you have a very nice Meeting, Thirtho! :)

Thank you Prabhupada

Thank you for this beautiful tribute Navasi. And thank you to Prabhupad for translation of so many sacred scriptures, blessing us in the western world.

I remember when I first started reading about Krishna. It was in 1998 and my grandfather had died earlier that year. He was very important to me and I was sad because I had not been able to be with him near the end, or attend his funeral. I didn't know anything about Prabhupada or Krishna but I loved the pictures in the books; they were so beautiful. Then I saw Prabhupada's picture and he looked like my grandfather! I think that also made me want to read the books.

Hare Krishna, Dear Rebecca,
This is just so sweet what you've said about how Prabhupad looked like your grandfather and that had an influence on your reading His books...
I know that to me, Prabhupad always felt like my father, (not that He was actually similar really, it was just a feeling) and in the real sense He is actually my True Father, my Spiritual Father....
So it was really nice reading what you said here, I know He's really the Father/Grandfather to us all!

True Mata Ji

Hare Krishna!

I agree mata ji, i am Hindu, but I know very little about Bhagwad Geeta and ved and never try to read these books, even my parents never asked me to read these books and same with 99% hindu, they are away from their treasure, i am also one of them.

There are many reason behind this, less education, and india was under other culture rules from several centuries, but truth is truth and real teaching is real. No one can hide the truth, thats why Ved and Bhagwad Geeta is shining again in world.

Ved and Bhagwad Geeta is not the property of hindunism, they are the property of all humanbeings. Only Ved & Bhagwad Geeta can uplift human being above from religious hate, because it is for human beings not for the religion, even not for hindu too, it is for all humankind .........

Hare Krishna!

Shining Treasures

Hare Krishna, Dear Vashisht,
Thank you for your very wise comments here.
Yes, the shining treasure of the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas belong to us all.... we only needed Srila Prabhupad to give us the "Keys To The Kingdom" so to speak in telling us the way to understand them, and also what to then Do with our understanding.
I really love what you've said about how it's only this that can lift us above religious hate, since it belongs to all human beings and is not about religion, even Hindu religion....
Very excellent observation.
Hare Krishna!!! : )

Prabhupada can be seen through his books.

Hare Krishna,

Navasi, u r really lucky to have met Sirla Prabhupada. Eventhough we haven't met him, we still feel his presence everytime we read his books.

The best way to offer our tribute to him, is by following the guidelines that he has mentioned so beautifilly in all his books

Hare Krishna!

Feelng His Presence

Hare Krishna, Dear Sriranjini,
You are exactly right and you have understood the essence of everything when you say that we can offer the best tribute by following His instructions (or guidelines).
That is so perfect, that's the whole thing, it's the way to show both our love and our best tribute to Him also.
Yes, it's true, we can certainly feel His presence when we read His books, listen to His lectures, hear Him chanting, etc... etc.. etc..
Thank you for these wonderful comments.

Jai Srila Prabhupada

Hare Krishna, Dear Mataji,

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I personally have faced this when I got introduced to Iskcon in the year 2000. Initially when I saw devotees worshipping Srila Prabhupada in the morning from 8 to 8:20 am, I used to get very angry and I stayed in the corner and dint participate in it. Once I somehow got forced to stand in the que for making offerings of leaves and flowers to Srila Prabhupada and I very forcibly had to do it that time. I even dint have love for Srimati Radharani and Lord Balarama that time.

However I realized that as I took chanting seriously in 2005, I slowly started falling in love with Srila Prabhupada, Srimati Radharani, Lord Balarama etc. This was really amazing and I was very surprised to see this change in me. I never expected that there would be some point of time when I would respect Srila Prabhupada. The power of chanting is really fantastic which not only gives us love for Krishna but even for His devotees.

Forced : )

Hare Krishna, Dear Mihir,
That is just so funny, how you were somehow 'forced' to stand in the que (or line as we call it here) to offer flowers to Srila Prabhupad!!
Imagine, what special mercy, that you somehow were 'forced' into service....
Yes, that's the power of chanting, but it's also the power of the service in itself.
Even if we serve from being 'forced' to do it... we still get the benefit and then eventually do it out of love.
A lot of times, as devotees we 'force' our own selves to engage in various devotional acts, even when we don't do it out of a true desire (or love) for doing it, but we get the benefit, and thus develop the love, and the desire.
Thank you for your comments. : )

It is amazing to see how Srila Prabhupada continues to attract many devotees to Krishna. Just by reading this thread, we can see how his potency still works.

By reading his books, people come to Krishna. This is because his books are filled with his realizations and not mere translations. He brings out the essence of Krishna consciousness. In Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.44 Suta Gosvami says that he will start speaking Bhagavatam as he heard from Sukadeva Gosvami and as he personally realized it - yatha-aditam yatha-mati. Just as Suta spoke to the group of sages what he heard and what he realized, Srila Prabhupada wrote what he heard from Sukadeva (thru the disciplic succession) and what he realized. And he made sure that the same succession continues by empowering his disciples to carry on the message of Bhagavatam.

Thanks to Navasi, who brought out this glorification of Srila Prabhupada by starting this thread.

Prabhupad's Potency

Hare Krishna, Dear Radhikesh prabhu,
Thank you so much for your comments here.
Yes, you are right, it is the potency of Srila Prabhupad that attracts so many people to become devotees.
Sometimes, people who are new to Krishna consciousness, have a hard time understanding Prabhupad, the way He speaks, His accent, etc... so they think that it may be best to listen instead to some lectures by someone that they find easier to understand.
There is of course tremendous benefit in all those lectures.
However, because Srila Prabhupad is a self realized soul, a Pure Devotee of Lord Krishna, simply by hearing the sound of His voice one is benefited to the point of liberation, even if they do not understand His words, or what He is explaining.
As it is said 'one eleventh of a second' of association with a Pure Devotee guarantees one liberation.
I even like to listen to His lectures in Hindi, even though I don't speak Hindi or understand it at all, just to hear the sound of Him speaking. Of course He also quotes a lot of scripture during it that I do recognize from His English lectures and books, but either way, I know it benefits me just to hear Him.
Thank you again for your wonderful comments to this thread.
